Hair
restoration surgery has evolved into an extremely successful cosmetic
procedure today.
Changes in harvesting donor grafts, as well
as microscopic techniques of graft preparation and implantation, have
resulted in a perfectly natural appearance and have relegated the
“pluggy” effects to ancient history.
The hair is removed from the occipital
area which is well below the crown .This hair is genetically programmed
to remain throughout the patient’s lifetime, despite being transplanted
to the bald area. The removed hair is then cut into naturally occurring
follicular units. That means that the hair is cut into one, two, or
three hair units exactly as it exits the skin. These units are implanted
as single, double, or triple hair units and are fit into individual
appropriately sized slits according to their size, giving the scalp a
perfectly natural appearance. The donor area is meticulously closed so
as to produce an imperceptible scar in the occipital hair bearing area.
The enjoyment of being a hair
restoration surgeon comes from using one’s past experiences, both good
and bad, to achieve the best possible results under variable conditions.
As each individual patient is unique, judgement must take a multitude of
factors into consideration when evaluating a patient. One must consider
hair color, hair density, individual hair diameter, as well as waviness
or curl. The patient’s skull shape, face shape ( such as round or
oval), age, and above all, the patient’s expectation must be thoroughly
discussed prior to any procedure being performed.
As in any other surgical procedure,
hair restoration is not to be taken lightly. The expertise of the
surgeon and staff, as well as the ability to communicate with the
patient, are essential components to achieve the most satisfying
results. |
